Book Challenge vs. Ban

The below graphics were created using the Pen America Index of School Book Bans covering the period of July 1, 2021 – December 31, 2022. Pen America differentiates if a book has been banned in a school library or in a classroom (which includes classroom libraries, curriculum, and optional reading lists). We included the instances where a book was banned pending investigation because removing the book from circulation during the investigation does make the book in fact banned.
